Egyptian Campiagn Heats Up
On Wednesday, Egyptians go to the polls in the country's first contested, multiparty presidential election. For the past 24 years, Mubarak has held a firm grip on power while running uncontested in rubber-stamp referendums. Partly at the urging of the United States, Egypt opened up its political process this year, and during a hectic three-week campaign for the Sept. 7 vote, Egyptians have been treated to vigorous electioneering by the 10 candidates.
Mubarak's ruling National Democratic Party, once known for its aging bosses and stodgy, Socialist-style rallies, has waged the slickest campaign, hiring a professional advertising agency and bringing in media consultants to deliver its message.
I found this funny:
"And in his campaign speeches Mubarak has even used that most Clintonesque of phrases: 'I feel your pain.'"
Hopefully, this will turn out well for the Egyptian people, and be another signpost for democracy in the Middle East.
