Book Review: Stephen Harper & The Future of Canada
I finished this book today on the plane ride back from Houston (it goes back to UVM tomorrow). I really enjoyed it. I don't often read contemporary biographies, so I don't have much to compare to, but to my knowledge, Harper has not written a book of his beliefs, so this is the close I get. In short, not only was this book a political biography of Harper, but for me, a crash course in contemporary Canadian politics (if you are looking to get caught up on this election, just check out Jess' wonderful post here).
That being said, this book flew by. I did not know much about the Quebec issue, but now I know enough about it to get by now. I wish I had the time to read a few more books on Canadian politics, but they seem to be difficult to get here in the States.
As for Harper, I think I may have another idol. Not only do we agree on most issues (or at least I imagine we would were he an American or I a Canadian), but we also have similar backgrounds (as of now). Neither of us were born into money, and both of us have a strong economic component to our thinking, as well as identifying more with a cause than a party.
Harper is fulfilling the Conservative Revolution of Reagan and Thatcher. Speaking of which, it sounds like America needs another one.
