Do You Remember...?
You found out about 9/11: In my second period religion class (I went to a Catholic High School) my sophomore year of high school. My teacher was late as usual, and one of the other students suggested we turn on the TV, because a plane had accidentally hit the World Trade Center. We turned the TV on, and were watching when the teacher came in, and he began watching. Soon after, we all watched in horror as the second plane streaked across the screen and into the other Tower. Someone mentioned how it was such a bizzare accident. My Tom Clancy-sense went of, and I said it probably wasn't an accident. It was most likely terrorism. We went to third period, and we had the TV on until the teacher said "Oh my God," and we saw the first Tower collapse. Then the other. In fourth period, ABC saw smoke coming from the White House. My heart sank, but it was not until right before we were let go early that I found out that the smoke was, in fact, from the Pentagon.
The start of the FIRST Gulf War - When we began combat operations: I vaugely remember it being on TV, with the green night vision. Ii was around my fifth brithday. I remember my mom putting up a yellow ribbon outside the door.
The Space Shuttle Challenger exploded: About two weeks shy of being born. (I have skipped all the others for which I was not alive)
The Space Shuttle Columbia broke up during re-entry: Saw a report on MSNBC or FOXNews TV about the shuttle losing radio contact. My family all watched with stunned hope.
President Clinton was acquitted of impeachment: Grade school sometime, so I had sketchy details.
Election night 2000: I couldn't vote, and previously, I always had to go to bed before they officially called it, and so, now in high school, I vowed to stay up. Not a good idea. My mom came downstairs at 7AM to find me still watching the TV. School that day was not fun.
