AFL-CIO Democratic Debate
Below is the liveblogging transcript.
8:35 PM: Kucinich: "I'm the Seabiscuit of this campaign." He looks like a jockey...
8:34 PM: Edwards doesn't like 4 year campaigns. Could of fooled me.
8:33 PM: Clinton asks America to bring brooms and vacuum cleaners to Washington to clean it up. Seems like that's how the Clintons left last time.
8:30 PM: Obama we to do more than change parties. Obama is positioning himself as the "change" candidate. Smart. Hillary represents the 1990s, for better or for worse.
8:26 PM: Keith asks, what have you done in this Congress? Kucinich: Nothing.
8:24 PM: Biden: A uniter, not a divider?
8:23 PM: Isn't the AFL-CIO a giant lobby?
8:21 PM: Ooh. "Lightning Round." Richardson says Cheney wouldn't be his VP. Shocking. Truly shocking.
8:16 PM: Hillary drops the "green collar" jobs buzzword. I hate campaign buzzwords.
8:15 PM: Did Dodd say reduce carbon output by 80% by 2080? Is that realistic?
8:12 PM: Is this "America I believe in" according to John Edwards yet a third America? You heard it here first, John Edwards lives in the multiverse.
8:10 PM: This is the part of the debate where the candidates grovel before Big Labor.
8:06 PM: Obama wants strong borders and to hold employers accountable. Fines, English, no rewards for illegals? He's better on immigration than McCain. Or Bush.
8:03 PM: According to the applause when Edwards rebuffed Olbermann, no one likes Keith Olbermann.
7:58 PM: Kucinich is in a union? For what? Goblins local?
7:56 PM: Biden gets booed and a call of "Answer the question!" when he dodges the mine question to talk about Pakistan.
7:55 PM: I still think these staged questioners are extremely unfair to everybody involved.
7:51 PM: For those wondering, the microwave enchiladas aren't as good as they smelled.
7:49 PM: Senator Clinton gets "booed" on implying Obama doesn't know what he's doing. Home field advantage is Obama's?
7:47 PM: Dodd talks too fast. Obama gets big applause for his "right battlefield" rhetoric. Sounds surprisingly hawkish.
7:45 PM: Hillary: "George Bush's war."
7:41 PM: My microwave enchilada smells really good, and more substantial than either Edwards' containment or Kucinich cut-and-run.
7:38 PM: Iraq I have no idea if Biden's plan will work, but it sounds more thought out than Obama's or Hillary's answers. Hillary: If they don't make the country secure, take away they money they would use to make the country secure?
7:33 PM: Democrats who answer the "China: Ally or Adversary" question directly: 0
Richardson, Obama, and Edwards say "competitor." Biden says "banker." Hillary says "Amen." Hillary knocks this one out of the park by bringing up kids and bad food/toys. Edwards mentions it, but it was Hillary's moment.
7:27 PM: Hillary: "I'm your girl!" If you want to beat the GOP. She looks like she's having fun. Also, Keith Olbermann is a jackass in any setting. Him complaining about the crowd makes him seem really elitist. Which, of course, he is.
7:26 PM: Number of free trade Democrats: 0 (Where's Mike Gravel?)
7:25 PM: Kucinich looks like he wants to start a labor uprising!
7:24 PM: Dodd wants to ban outsourcing? How does that work?
7:23 PM: Biden vs. Harper on Smackdown!
7:19 PM: Hillary wants a "broad reform" of NAFTA..."smart trade..." She wants more managed trade.
7:15 PM: Kucinich wants to pull out of NAFTA and the WTO?
7:12 PM: Is Edwards trying be a Southern Kennedy? The dramatic pauses are a little much. Also, can a man who has spent four years campaigning for president run as an outsider?
7:10 PM: Biden is really pushing this "man of action" persona. I think it is playing well right now. But we all know that Biden tends not to think before he speaks...
7:09 PM: Are Obama and Hillary fighting for "home field advantage"?
7:08 PM: Hillary mentions Da Bears! Nice. Mentions that infrastructure is part of homeland security. She mentions 9-11. If she were a Republican people would be accusing her of fear mongering.
7:05 PM: Dodd says cut the war funding to build highways. Raises "Star Wars" again. Didn't they learn anything?
7:02 PM: I wonder if the AFL-CIO even went through the charade of trying to sponsor a GOP debate.
7:01 PM: Gentlemen, start! your! engines!
7:00 PM: This music, and the fact that this is at Soldier Field makes me feel like this really is a sporting event for the nerdiest of us.
6:56 PM: Tucker and Chris Matthews are wondering about how Hillary is going to talk trade when Bill Clinton was "the face of free trade."
