Only In New Jersey

Probably not a good idea:
U.S. Senate hopeful Murray Sabrin burned through $1,050 of his campaign cash Saturday on a Kentucky Derby long-shot.
Sabrin, a Ramapo College professor, announced the bet during a press conference Friday in Atlantic City. Sabrin’s wager, which is apparently legal under federal elections laws, aimed to highlight his promise to legalize sports betting at casinos.
Sabrin himself is a long shot to win the Republican nomination for the Senate in the June primary. He is running a distant third, according to a recent poll.
"Cowboy Cal may have finished in ninth, but Murray Sabrin will finish first on June 3," said George Ajjan, a spokesman for Sabrin.
Ajjan said that he heard odds on the horse had reached 41-to-1 when Sabrin placed his bet at Monmouth Park. At those odds, a win by Cowboy Cal would have raised more than $40,000 for the campaign.

The Bacon Equation

This comes as good news to be, as I gave up pork for Lent, and can only this week consume again the pinnacle of human achievement upon this earth: Bacon.

Researchers in Britain have come up with an equation: N = C + {fb(cm) · fb(tc)} + fb(Ts) + fc · ta. In this equation lies the secret to a good bacon sandwich:

It concluded that the best bacon butties were made with crisply grilled, not-too-fat bacon between thick slices of white bread.

Eureka!

“We often think that it’s the taste and smell of bacon that consumers find most attractive,” Dr. Clayton said in a news release. “But our research proves that texture and sound is just, if not more, important.”

NYT has more, including what all of those funky letters in the equation mean.
